Exit on spot kicks for second season in a row
Hallam 1 Runcorn Linnets 1
(Hallam won 5-3 on penalties)
Report by Dave Bettley
Linnets were knocked out of the Isuzu FA Trophy on penalties for a second consecutive season, after throwing themselves a lifeline with a stoppage-time equaliser.
It meant their involvement in the competition abruptly ended in the steel city of Sheffield, where it had begun just a fortnight earlier with a late comeback victory at Stocksbridge Park Steels.
Steels' neighbours Hallam, thus far without a win in Northern Premier League East, claimed another West Division scalp to back up their spot-kick success against Mossley in the previous round.
Runcorn's performance subsided after a promising start, despite the late boost of centre forward Lewis Buckley's first goal in his hometown colours.
The visitors were left to rue not making more of early superiority, and conceding another avoidable goal while cursing their luck in the shootout, when Conor Harwood struck the bar with the away side's second attempt.
It was the only miss by either side. But Calvin Hare, having made two outstanding saves in the last 10 minutes to keep alive Linnets' hopes, came close to saving the penultimate kick from the hosts.
Runcorn's 'keeper got his body behind Jesse Omoregbee's unconvincing effort. However, the ball squirmed away from him and across the goalline.
Callum Leigh tucked home Runcorn's fourth penalty to prolong matters after substitutes Nick Rushton and Matty Whittingham had also converted.
But Danai Rule extended the South Yorkshiremen's 100% record from 12 yards.
This sealed the tie, meaning Linnets did not get to take their superfluous fifth pen.
Runcorn's starting line-up was stronger than the team they had fielded down the road at Stocksbridge.
There was a Sunday surprise awaiting travelling supporters with teenager Oscar Wright being included after his arrival on loan from National League North club Morecambe.
Wright partnered Buckley in a two-pronged attack, the latter starting for the first time since breaking a toe on the opening day of the campaign.
Michael Ellison opted to go with a back three, comprising skipper Jacques Welsh, vice-captain Peter Wylie and Ollie Southern with Dec McLoughlin (on the right) and Fin Ryan as wing-backs.
With Franklin Denison and Callum Leigh linking up in central midfield and Harry McGee just in front of them, Runcorn carried a threat, providing a good supply of ball for Buckley and Wright to dovetail neatly in attack.
Linnets almost struck in the opening minute with Wright's diagonal ball from inside the box almost finding McGee but the No.10 was crowded out at the left post.
Finishing continued to elude the lively visitors. Midway through the half, Buckley got beyond Hallam's defence with his delicate chip seemingly taking an age to reach the goal. When it did, the right post got in its way.
McGee was promptly forced to quit after coming off worse in a clash of heads with team-mate Ryan.
Having been largely second best, Hallam went in front in the 38th minute.
The manner of the goal wa particularly unsatisfactory as Runcorn were caught out at a long throw-in from the right.
It was headed on for Ethan Kachosa to knock the ball home all too easily.
Linnets should have had a penalty in stoppage time when Rushton, replacement for McGee, was pushed over by two Halllam defenders. But referee James Gerring was having none of it.
As Runcorn struggled after the restart to replicate their first-half fluidity, Hallam's scorer Kachosa was twice denied in the final throes by excellent one-on-one saves by Hare.
Runcorn's passing had let them down in the second half. A change of formation to four at the back and three up top didn't improve the situation.
But just when it seemed as though Linnets had run out of ideas, Buckley and Whittingham conjured up an incisive exchange for the former to steer a shot from the left of the box inside the far upright.
The No.9 will have been relieved as well as delighted to get off the mark after the injury-hit start to his Runcorn career.
Having followed up their last-minute leveller at Park Steels with a decisive injury-time strke, Linnets almost repeated the feat. But Rushton and Harwood saw shots blocked in the same last-gasp attack.
It left this Second Round Qualifying tie to be settled on penalties, without the inconvenience of extra-time.
After last season's home loss on spot-kicks to Morpeth Town at the third qualifying stage, there was further agony ahead for Runcorn.
Runcorn Linnets: Calvin Hare, Ollie Southern, Fin Ryan (Matty Whittingham, 50 mins), Jacques Welsh, Peter Wylie, Franklin Denison (Connor Day, 75 mins), Dec McLoughlin (Conor Harwood, 57 mins), Callum Leigh, Lewis Buckley, Harry McGee (Nick Rushton, 27 mins), Oscar Wright (Noah Roberts 72 mins).
Attendance: 394.
Lewis Buckley's first Runcorn goal was unfortunately in vain as we bowed out of the Wembley competition.
