Linnets have done all they can to win the battle for runners-up spot in the North West U21 Development League's Premier Division
Two goals in the last 10 minutes turned what looked like being a comfortable victory into a convincing one.
Tom Beswick struggles to stay on his feet under the weight of a visiting challenge.
In completing their first top-flight campaign with a flourish on Sunday, Linnets were further boosted by defeat for chasing Stalybridge Celtic at Steven Gerrard Academy.
'Bridge will now need to win all of their remaining three games over the next seven days to overhaul second-placed Runcorn, who they trail by nine points.
When teams finish level on points, placings are settled on head-to-head record, instead of goal difference - and Stalybridge, in third, boast a win and a draw against Linnets this seaaon.
Sam Stephens glides past two Tigers players.
In what was a swansong for several players at the top of the agegroup, Linnets had to wait 45 minutes to break Hyde's resistance.
But they then found reward for their superiority in fuller measure.
The visiting 'keeper had delayed home progress with fine saves from Fin Ryan and Eneil Gumbs, whose 15-yard left-foot strike was spectacularly turned on to the crossbar.
The deadlock was ended by the last attack of the half.
Lewis Crane (left) is mobbed after opening the scoring in the last minute of the first half.
The division's top scorer is at it again, sealing victory with his second of the game late on.
A left-wing corner from Owen Cushion was met by Jay Lee, whose header across goal was converted at close range by top scorer Lewis Crane.
Crane would fittingly complete Runcorn's campaign with its final goal three minutes from time - a poacher's finish from a Gumbs pass.
This not only took the scorer's overall U21s tally for the season to 29, four clear of Stalybridge's leading marksman Nathal Fontaine in the hunt for the division's Golden Boot but sealed his Thistledown Group award as Linnets man of the match.
As in the first half, most of the chances after the break came late in the piece but Runcorn had headed into the closing stages with a two-goal advantage.
Fin Ryan fires in a cross for the second-placed hosts.
Cushion's left-wing cross evaded Lewis Crane at the near post but was steered across the line by skipper Lee, following in behind.
Arty Benjamin, in only his fifth appearance of 2025-26 grabbed his first campaign goal as a midfield substitute with 10 minutes remaining.
Runcorn must wait to discover if they have followed up last season's title success in Championship B with second or third spot.
Stalybridge U21s visit Charnock Richard on Tuesday before home matches against UDA Soccer Cestrians on Thursday and Stockport Town next Sunday.
Linnets' third goalscorer Arty Benjamin finds himself in the thick of the action again.
